Artificial Turf
Specification Guide

What pile height, face weight, gauge, dtex, backing and drainage actually change on a job, with the verified figures for all ten stocked lines. Written so an estimator can read a spec sheet and know which number matters.

Pile height

Pile height is the length of the blade above the backing. Across the stocked line it runs from 0.75 in on the Crown Putt putting surface to a full 2 in on Regent 100 and Princess 115. Taller piles read as a lusher lawn and are specified where appearance leads; shorter, denser piles hold their look under traffic and recover rather than laying flat.

It is not a quality measure. A 1.38 in blade and a 2 in blade can carry the same face weight, and the shorter one will usually stand up better under repeated use.

Face weight and total weight

Face weight is the yarn above the backing, measured in ounces per square yard. Total weight adds the backing and finish coat. Face weight is the number that matters for wear: across the line it runs from 55 oz/sq yd on Crown Putt to 88 oz/sq yd on Princess 115, with total weights from 77 to 112 oz/sq yd.

Figures carry the manufacturer's “approx.” qualifier and are subject to confirmation. Princess 115 has no published total weight or spec sheet, so request it from the trade desk before relying on it in a submittal.

Gauge

Gauge is the spacing between stitch rows across the width of the roll. Every landscape, pet and sports line runs a 3/8 in gauge. Crown Putt runs 3/16 in, half that spacing, which puts twice as many stitch rows under the ball. That density, plus the absence of a thatch layer, is what produces a consistent roll on a putting surface.

Yarn and dtex

The landscape, pet and sports lines are monofilament polyethylene with a curled thatch layer. Crown Putt is texturized polypropylene with no thatch. Dtex describes the mass of the filament: across the line the face yarn runs from 6,600 on Crown Putt up to 13,400 on Superior Natural 80, with Majestic 110 at 12,600, the heaviest single filament in the landscape range.

A heavier filament resists bending and holds its shape longer under traffic. It is the specification detail most often left off a quote, and the one worth asking about when two lines look similar on face weight.

Backing and drainage

Every line is tufted onto a polypropylene fabric primary backing at approximately 7 oz/sq yd, finished with a polyurethane coat between 15 and 22 oz/sq yd depending on the line. The backing is permeable and perforated, so water passes through the turf rather than pooling on it.

What is not publishedNo drainage rate is published for any product. Installed drainage performance is determined by the base and sub-base designed and built by the installing contractor, not by the backing alone. Treat any published inches-per-hour figure with caution.

Compliance

Compliance is published per product and is not the same across the line, so it should never be stated as a blanket claim. Prince 80, Queen 90, Imperial 100, Regent 100, Elite Pet 80, Crown Putt and Champion Sport publish lead-free and PFAS-free per mill testing. Superior Natural 80 publishes lead and mercury. Majestic 110 publishes lead, cadmium and mercury. Princess 115 publishes none. All except Princess 115 are FIFA Quality tested. The full table is on the warranty and compliance page.

Warranty

Every line carries the same 16-year limited material warranty: an 8-year factory warranty followed by an 8-year Superior residual warranty, from the date material ships. The residual term is prorated at 100% of remaining material value in years 9 to 11, 50% in years 12 to 14 and 25% in years 15 to 16, and extends to the Registered Owner only. Coverage depends on the product being used in the application it was approved for. Installation workmanship and dye-lot variation are excluded.
